The Art of Food Plating

We Eat with Our Eyes First

A beautifully plated dish increases the perceived value and enjoyment of a meal. You don't need fancy tools, just a few professional principles.

1. The Clock Rule

Think of your plate as a clock face. For a balanced look, place your protein at 6 o'clock, vegetables at 2 o'clock, and starch at 10 o'clock.

2. Height and Layering

Flat food is boring. Use a mound of grains or mashed potatoes to lean your protein against, creating verticality and interest.

3. Use Negative Space

Don't crowd the plate. Leaving empty space around the edges draws the eye inward toward the center of the dish.

4. The Power of Garnishes

A final sprinkle of fresh herbs or a drizzle of high-quality oil adds a pop of color and signals to the diner that the dish is fresh and complete.
