Classic Berlin Currywurst with Spiced Curry-Tomato Sauce & Fries
Berlin's legendary street food institution: plump German bratwurst grilled to a crisp exterior, sliced into bite-sized medallions, smothered in a homemade spiced curry-tomato glaze, and dusted with fragrant Madras curry powder.
Ingredients
Bratwurst
- 4 high-quality German pork bratwurst sausages
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil for frying
Signature Berlin Curry Sauce
- 1 can (400g) crushed tomatoes or 1 cup tomato puree
- 3 tbsp tomato paste & 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tbsp mild Madras curry powder & 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper & sea salt
Serving
- Extra curry powder for dusting
- Crispy golden french fries (Pommes Frites) with mayonnaise
Instructions
Simmer the Curry Sauce
In a saucepan, combine crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, curry powder, smoked paprika, and cayenne. Simmer for 12-15 minutes until rich, thick, and glossy.
Pan-Fry the Bratwurst
Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Fry the bratwurst for 8-10 minutes, turning frequently until browned and sizzling with crisp skins.
Slice the Sausages
Cut the hot sausages into 3/4-inch bite-sized diagonal coins.
Smother and Dust
Arrange sliced sausages on plates, ladle hot curry sauce generously over the top, and dust with additional curry powder.
Serve with Fries
Serve immediately with hot crispy fries and wooden currywurst forks.
