Classic Cuban Mojito

Ingredients

Mojito

  • 10 fresh mint leaves
  • 1 lime, cut into 4 wedges
  • 2 tbsp white sugar (or simple syrup)
  • 60ml white rum (skip for a virgin mojito)
  • Crushed ice
  • Sparkling soda water, to top
  • Mint sprigs & lime wheel for garnish

Instructions

1

Muddle Lime & Sugar

Place the lime wedges and sugar into the bottom of a highball glass. Use a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon to firmly press and twist the lime, releasing all the juice and oils from the skin.

2

Add Mint

Drop in the fresh mint leaves. Muddle very gently — just 2-3 light presses to bruise them and release their fragrance. Do NOT over-muddle or the mint will turn bitter.

3

Add Rum

Pour in the white rum (or skip for non-alcoholic). Stir briefly to combine with the lime-sugar mixture at the bottom.

4

Fill with Ice

Fill the glass to the brim with crushed ice. The crushed ice is key — it dilutes and chills the drink perfectly.

5

Top with Soda

Pour the sparkling soda water over the top slowly. Give the drink a gentle stir with a long spoon just to combine the layers.

6

Garnish and Serve

Tuck a fresh sprig of mint deep into the ice so the leaves sit above the rim. Add a lime wheel on the edge. Serve immediately with a straw.
