Classic Greek Moussaka

A traditional Greek casserole with layers of eggplant, spiced ground meat, and a creamy béchamel topping.

Classic Greek Moussaka

Ingredients

Vegetables:

  • 3 large eggplants
  • Salt for sweating
  • Olive oil for frying

Meat Sauce:

  • 500g ground lamb or beef
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 400g crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp allspice

Béchamel:

  • 50g butter
  • 50g flour
  • 500ml milk
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan

Instructions

Prep Eggplants

Slice eggplants, salt them to draw out moisture, then rinse and pat dry. Fry or roast until golden.

Make Meat Sauce

Brown meat with onion and garlic. Stir in tomatoes and spices. Simmer for 30 minutes until thick.

Prepare Béchamel

Melt butter, stir in flour, then gradually add milk until thickened. Remove from heat, whisk in egg yolks and cheese.

Assemble

Layer eggplants and meat sauce in a baking dish. Top with the creamy béchamel sauce.

Bake

Bake at 180°C for 45-50 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly. Let rest before serving.
